THE ANKLE SPRAIN: KEY ISSUES
Lateral ankle sprain injuries have the highest reinjury rate of all lower limb musculoskeletal injuries.
Individuals who incur an acute lateral ankle sprain injury have a twofold increased risk of reinjury in the year following their initial injury.
The ankle joint is the most commonly injured body part in youth sport and recreation and ankle sprain is the most common injury.
There is a 98% probability of an ankle sprain recurrence within 1 yeaR post injury for an inversion ankle sprain in popular youth sports such as soccer and basketball.
Prospective evidence also indicates that at least 40% of individuals who sustain a first-time ankle sprain develop residual symptoms, often defined as chronic ankle instability (CAI).
